Maybe it’s just us but gazing into this cool ocean blue Larimar sphere is quite tranquil!
This tropical semi-stone is a rare blue variety of the mineral, pectolite. Larimar can only be found in a remote mountain range of a coastal region in the Dominican Republic. Its color varies from white, light blue, greenish-blue, to turquoise blue. Although pectolite is fairly common and naturally occurring, Larimar is scarce because there is NO other pectolite deposit in the world that can produce such a spectacular sea-blue hue. As a result, demand for Larimar has risen in recent years with mineral enthusiasts and jewelers alike.
Miguel Mendez, one of the explorers who discovered Larimar in the 1970’s, named the stone by combining his daughter’s name, Larissa, with the word Mar, the Spanish word for sea, to suggest the calming color of the Caribbean Sea. A special name for a special stone!
Like most minerals, there are a few aliases for “cool” minerals such as Larimar. Do you know that Larimar is also known as Dolphin Stone, Blue Pectolite, Atlantis Stone, and Stefilia’s Stone?
Forged from temperamental volcanoes over millions of years ago, Larimar is believed to have calming effects for those who are experiencing internal turmoil. Those who suffer from anxiety, depression, and other mental health problems often turn to this semi-precious stone to ease their minds.
Specimen Locality: Mina de Larimar. Barahona, Dominican Republic
*Larimar is photosensitive and the distinct ocean blue color can fade if exposed to excess sunlight and heat. Be sure to display it in a shaded area in your space.*
