Rhodochrosite on Matrix

Stone of Compassion

Origin

Sweet Home Mine, Colorado.  USA

General Description

Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate based mineral with a low hardness (between 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs hardness scale).  It forms in a trigonal crystal system and splits with rhombohedral cleavage in three directions.  Quality rhodochrosite specimens are cherry-red in color but it can also occur in pink to light brown.

Commercial Uses

Due to its chemical composition, the main commercial use for rhodochrosite is as an ore of manganese, which is an additive to improve strength, workability and resistance to wear for aluminum.  Quality specimens are used as decor and decorative stones for collectors. Due to its low hardness and brittle nature, it is rare for rhodochrosite to be faceted for jewelry.

Metaphysical Properties

Rhodochrosite is known as the Stone of Compassion. It supports deeper emotional connections for and openness to love without judgment or expectations. The soft rose pink color gemstone can also mitigate emotional trauma and improves mood.
