Velveteen Malachite

AKA: Fibrous Malachite

Origin

Ruashi Mine: Katanga Province, Democractic Republic of Congo

General Description

Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral.  This opaque, green-banded mineral can crystallize in 3 different forms: botryoidal, fibrous, or stalagmitic masses.  Fibrous Malachite specimens show chatoyancy, an optical reflectance effect seen in certain gemstones and minerals.  Light reflecting off of the fibrous clusters of malachite crystals creates a holographic effect.

The mineral’s name derived from the Greek word, molochites lithos, “mallow-green stone” due to its resemblance to the leaves of the mallow plant.

Commercial Uses

Archaeologist evidence indicates that malachite has been mined for thousands of years.  The mineral is mined and smelted to obtain copper.  Malachite is also used as an ornamental stone and as a gemstone for jewelry.

Metaphysical Properties

Malachite is known as the Stone of Transformation. It clears and activates all chakras and harmonizes one’s spirituality.  Malachite encourages unconditional love, change, and risk-taking. Gift this to a loved one who might be going through a difficult time.
